Gold Coast crime: Police to extradite pair over alleged M1 carjacking

Two people who allegedly attempted to steal multiple cars on the southern Gold Coast stretch of the M1 are to be brought back to Queensland by detectives.

TWO people who allegedly attempted to steal two cars on the southern Gold Coast stretch of the M1 are set to be brought back to Queensland by detectives.

Gold Coast detectives will today apply for the extradition of the man and girl who were arrested in Newcastle following the alleged armed robberies last Friday.

The couple, a 27-year-old Western Australian man and a 17-year-old girl of no fixed address were arrested by NSW police outside a local shopping centre in Newcastle yesterday morning.

The man is scheduled to appear at the Newcastle Local Court today where Queensland Police will seek his extradition to Brisbane tomorrow afternoon

Police allege they were both in a silver Ford Falcon with no registration plates was being driven dangerously south on the M1 near Burleigh when it stopped suddenly in front of a vehicle around 3pm last Friday.

It is alleged that, while armed with a “sharp implement”, the pair got out of the car and threatened drivers while attempting to steal two different vehicles.

After their unsuccessful attempts, the pair returned to their car and drove south on the M1 before allegedly confronting another driver of a vehicle near the Palm Beach exit.

The pair allegedly forced a 67-year-old woman out of her black 2017 Mazda CX-3 hatchback before taking off in the car.
