Gold Coast crime: Driver charged over shocking 200km/h M1 street race

Police claim the driver of the car reached extraordinary speeds while racing another vehicle on the M1.

A DRIVER allegedly caught street racing at speeds of up to 200km/hr on the M1 didn’t spot an undercover police car as it whizzed passed officers, police will allege.

Officers from the Tweed/Byron Target Action Group were travelling in an unmarked car on the Pacific Highway at Banora Point at 9.20pm on Sunday when they were allegedly overtaken by two vehicles at speed.

A white Volkswagen Golf GTI and a white Holden Cruz, both driven by P-platers, were racing each other, reaching shocking speeds between 170km/h to 200km/h - up to double the legal speed limit - police allege.

Police managed to pulled over the Volkswagen on the Pacific Highway off-ramp at Tweed Heads while the other car continued driving.

A 19-year-old man with a P2 license is due to front court charged with organising or promoting a race between vehicles, driving at speed dangerous to the public and P2 driver exceeding speed greater than 45km/h.

His license was suspended and his car registration was cancelled.

The man is due to face Tweed Heads Local Court on Monday 6 January.

Police are still working to find the second driver.
