Gold Coast apartment building damaged after car slammed into entry

An apartment building under construction on the Gold Coast Highway has been heavily damaged after a car slammed into its entrance in the early this morning.

THE entrance to an apartment building on the Gold Coast Highway has been badly damaged after a car slammed into it early this morning.

Between 4.50am and 5.30am a silver Kia smashed into the Otto Mermaid Beach building, owned by Morris Property Group, which is currently under construction.

It is alleged the car was travelling north on the Gold Coast Highway when it struck a concrete island, causing it to lose control.

The car flipped and crashed into the ground floor of the under-construction Otto building, about 5m from the road.

The driver allegedly got out of the badly damaged car and ran from the scene.

A police spokeswoman said there was “heavy damage” to the ground floor of the building, with glass doors destroyed and electrical wires left exposed.

Two and three bedroom apartments are being sold at the eight-level Mermaid Beach apartment building from $519,900.

It is understood the building was near completion, with its website listing homes as being ready to move into in 15 days.

Police are investigating.
