UPDATE: A MAN has been charged with the stabbing of another man at a Mudgeeraba sportsground earlier today.

A 32-year-old Highland Park man was charged with one count each of affray, wounding and possession of a knife in a public place.

He will appear at Southport Magistrates Court on August 2.

EARLIER: A MAN has allegedly been stabbed in the chest in broad daylight in a Mudgeeraba sportsground car park this afternoon, sparking a nearby school lockdown.

District duty officer Senior Sergeant Brett MacGibbon said the victim, a 51-year-old man was stabbed just under his ribs around 3.15pm at Firth Park, off Somerset Drv.

His alleged attacker, a 32-year-old man, is believed to be known to him and was arrested a short time later in nearby Reedy Creek.

As a result of the arrest, at approximately 3.25pm, Hillcrest Christian College was placed into lockdown, causing panic among students, parents and teachers.

One student said it was first thought there was a man at the bottom of the hill with a gun.

“School was finished and suddenly we heard an announcement over the PA system that nobody was to leave the campus and we were sent to the libraries and classrooms,” the 16-year-old said.

“They told us to lock all the windows and doors and that’s when we realised ‘oh my God this clearly isn’t a drill’.

“You’ve got your family and your friends and there’s a fear of never seeing them again and that’s something that goes through your mind and something you never want to think about.

“We were just shocked … You don’t expect this to happen.

“Some students were calling their parents, telling them not to come near the school.

“The teachers were distracting the smaller kids, so they didn’t figure out what was happening.

“I’m grateful nothing bad happened, no one got hurt, I’m grateful I feel safe.”

Shortly after, Hillcrest parents received an email notifying them of the lockdown, explaining they acted based upon information they were given at the time.

Snr Sgt MacGibbon said it was unknown what started the altercation between the two men.

Snr Sgt MacGibbon said the weapon used in the attack was a pocket knife.

The man was stabbed twice, with one witness saying there was blood all over his left side after the alleged attack.

“I came after the cop cars,” Maryanne Folpp said.

“An older man was sitting on one of those pylons, with his left side soaked in blood.”

Another woman, who declined to be named, said she had been taking her children to the Firth Park for four years and was shocked.

Two ambulance crews and a critical care paramedic crew responded to the scene, where officers treated the injured man.

He has been transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital in a serious condition.
