Woman's M1 madness swerving all across highway

INCREDIBLE footage has captured the horrifying moments a driver swerves from one side of the highway to the other, barely missing cars before taking an exit and blowing two tyres.

And her passengers were allegedly her partner’s two young children.

Pete Basmadjian and his family were returning from an outing yesterday afternoon when they spotted the wayward driver travelling north along the M1 on the northern Gold Coast.

Mr Basmadjian said he noticed the black SUV when the sun began to set and the car hadn’t turned its lights on.

“I saw her change lanes without indicating, then she swerved,” he said.

“I told my wife to get (her) phone out, it had already been swerving for 10 kilometres by then.”

Mr Basmadjian said he and another car turned their hazard lights on to alert other drivers of the erratic behaviour and keep them at bay.

In the footage posted to Facebook, a black car can be seen weaving from one side of the highway to the other, in and out of the lanes.

The driver does not appear to indicate and barely manages to avoid crashing into cars passing her by.

Mr Basmadjian said she was also allegedly speeding up to 120km/h during her drive.

He followed the car as it turned into exit 41, Computer Road in Yatala, capturing the car crashing into a gutter before swerving back onto the road before the roundabout.

In the clip, the two left wheels appear to be blown out.

After the driver takes the roundabout, the female driver finally parks the car on a median strip on the side of the road.

Mr Basmadjian said he and another man then talked to the driver, where she told them she had two children in the car.

“She was staggering and not very coherent,” he said.

“We were just concerned initially for her safety, that she would kill herself … but then there were also kids in the car.”

Police confirmed they had received a report of a car allegedly swerving all over the road around 5.40pm yesterday.

Police spoke to the 21-year-old woman and did a routine breath-test, which came back negative.

The woman was also drug tested. Police are still waiting on results.

A police spokeswoman said police would continue to investigate the incident.
