POLICE have released footage of some of the final moments of former bikie enforcer Ricky Ciano’s life to appeal to the public for information about how he died.
The ex-Rebels kingpin from Sydney had not long quit his gang life to go straight on the Gold Coast before he was found dead from a drug overdose in his white BMW in Oberon, western NSW on Valentines Day.
But five months on and police are still unsure whether the 35-year-old was murdered with a “hot shot” of drugs or dumped after an accidental overdose and have renewed their appeal for help in an attempt to “piece together” his final moments.
NSW Police Homicide Squad Commander Detective Acting Superintendent Jason Dickinson said officers wanted to speak with a number of people they believe had seen Mr Ciano in the days leading up to his death.
“We’ve tracked his BMW from the vehicle stop through the Blue Mountains and into the Oberon area, and then the car goes back and forth a number of times,” he said.
“We believe Mr Ciano may have stayed in the Oberon area and someone else drove his car on the other trips, so we obviously want to speak with those people.”
Police say Ciano’s body was found just before 8pm on February 14 inside his 2015 BW M3 sedan on Duckmaloi Road at Duckmaloi, 15km away from Oberon.
Ciano was visiting Sydney and had been reported missing a day earlier by family.
Police say days earlier, on Saturday February 11, Ciano was stopped by highway patrol police for a matter in Penrith.
The footage released to the public yesterday shows Ciano speaking to an officer on the side of the road on the Saturday as well as him driving down a highway.
Detectives say they want to speak to anyone who might have travelled between Penrith and Oberon over that weekend to come forward.
They are also interested in a Toyota Hiace van seen over the weekend near Oberon.
“There is also a white Toyota Hiace van seen travelling to the same rural area outside of Oberon on the Saturday, which we are also working to identify,” Acting Supt Dickinson said.
“We’re keen to speak to anyone who may have seen Mr Ciano, his BMW, or the Hiace van at anytime over that weekend.
“Our inquiries in the Oberon area lead us to believe his vehicle was parked — where it was later located — as early as the Sunday afternoon.
“While we’ve already made numerous inquiries, we are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who was on Duckmaloi Road around that time and has not yet spoken to police.”
Anyone with information is urged to contact Crime Stoppers 1800 333 000.
