A Gold Coast beautician used a sneaky trick to steal from a client during an eyelash extension, using it to go on a $6600 shopping spree.

A GOLD Coast beautician scammed the credit card details from a client while she had her eyes closed for eyelash extensions.

Casey Jade Leather then went on a spending spree, splashing out $6600 over six days in June on an Apple Watch, Xbox, Samsung sound bar, MIMCO handbags and wallets, Ugg boots, clothes and kids play sets.

Leather pleaded guilty in the Southport Magistrates Court today to 19 fraud charges and one count of possessing dangerous drugs.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Reece Foort said the woman was having her eyelashes done and unable to open her eyes when Leather stole the cards.

After taking down the details, Leather then returned to the cards to the woman’s wallet.

He said police found a number of the items purchased when they raided Leather’s Upper Coomera home.

“There were also handwritten notes on how she was conducting the operation,” he said.

“She had lists of how she was keeping track of what she had ordered and what she received.”

Leather’s solicitor Emma Kearney, of IDE Lawyers, said the fraud was Leather’s way of “having a mental breakdown”.

“Rather than turning to drugs, it was to purchase items to provide her a brief moment of happiness,” she said.

“She very much regrets her actions.”

Ms Kearney said Leather’s home eyelash business had closed down.

“The customer she stole from took to social media to warn about her actions,” she said.

Ms Kearney said Leather had mental health issues which stemmed from her father calling her fat from a young age.

She said Leather had been on a diet since her pre-teens and had only recently escaped an abusive relationship.

Magistrate Jane Bentley sentenced Leather to six months in prison, to be wholly suspended for 12 months.

“The lady whose credit cards you stole came to you for a service,” she said.

“She thought and she should have been able to leave the cards in your care.”

She ordered Leather pay $3808 in restitution.

Convictions were recorded.
