Brisbane man allegedly placed baby girl in chokehold at Gold Coast‘s Pacific Pines

A has been accused of a shocking assault on an 11-month-old baby girl on the Gold Coast yesterday, with a court told there were several witnesses to the incident.

A BRISBANE man accused of assaulting a baby girl on the Gold Coast yesterday “looked like he was going to pull her head off”, a court has been told.

The 45-year-old man allegedly attacked the 11-month-old and his partner at Pacific Pines on Tuesday. He cannot be named to protect the identity of the child.

Overseeing a bail application, Magistrate John Costanzo told Southport Magistrates Court the baby was “alleged to have been placed in a chokehold and pulled away from the aggrieved”.

“The prosecution is in the possession of several witness statements that say the child looked like it was not breathing,” he said.

“It looked like he was going to pull her head off and her eyes were wide and she was non-responsive and making no sound.

“She was red flushed in the face and had blue-tinged lips.”

Mr Costanzo said the man had a different version of events about how the baby was injured.

“Nevertheless, what is alleged is extremely serious and there are several witnesses,” he said.

“It seems to be quite a strong Crown case.”

The 11-month-old girl was allegedly placed in a chokehold.

Mr Costanzo said the man – who faces charges of common assault (domestic violence) and contravening a domestic violence order – “has a history of violence and breaching court orders”.

“The criminal history, while not extremely dated, is somewhat dated, in that it contains offences going back to 2009 and beyond,” he said.

“But there are convictions for breaching a domestic violence order in 2004, breaching a probation order in 2007, assault occasioning bodily harm twice (in) 2007 and 2009.”

Mr Costanzo said the allegations indicated “this defendant’s answer to everything is to be violent and indeed breach court orders”.

“In all these circumstances, I find there are no conditions which could adequately ameliorate the risk that exists,” he said.

Mr Costanzo refused bail and said the man presented “an unacceptable risk of breaching bail and reoffending”.

The man showed little emotion as he was led back to Southport Watch-house.

His case was adjourned to November 22.

It’s expected Queensland Police may lay further charges over Tuesday’s alleged attack.

Police were not able to provide details about the condition of the baby girl.
