FIREFIGHTERS have been treated by paramedics and a teen is in custody after a fierce house fire blanketed Southport with smoke this morning.
Fire crews battled the ferocious blaze for more than an hour after a North St house erupted in flames at 10.40am.
The house was gutted in the blaze and a 17-year-old youth was taken into police custody.
One firefighter was carried from the yard of the house and treated by paramedics after overheating while fighting the blaze, which forced the busy North St to be closed.
Queensland Police senior sergeant Brett MacGibbon said the investigation was centred around two juveniles that were seen fleeing from the house before it was engulfed in flames.
“One of those we have in our custody and he will be assisting with our investigation.” He said.
“We have not made contact with the owner of the premises.”
Snr Sgt MacGibbon said initially there were concerns that people were inside the building however those people had been accounted for.
Queensland Ambulance Service inspector Pat Berry confirmed firefighters were treated after battling the ‘very hot’ blaze but they did not require hospitalisation.
“We believe no persons were inside the house,” he said
He said it was believed the house was abandoned and there were concerns asbestos could have been in the smoke.
Firefighters continue to dampen down the blaze and have moved the growing crowd of onlookers back fearing asbestos in the building.
Witnesses said they saw smoke coming from the house in Southport before it burst into flames.

Other witnesses told The Gold Coast Bulletin the house was normally lived in by street kids and they saw people running from the house.
