Talented young Toowoomba adults living with disabilities have taken to the stage in Brisbane to debut in the very first Blue Tongue Jamboree.
The group had been working hard for months to hone their skills in dance, song and theatre in preparation for the Jamboree a celebration of “creativity, courage and inclusion”.
Helmed by Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts graduates Laura Shaw and Jack Twelvetree, the crew performed upbeat song and dance routines as well as theatre works
“We wanted the night to be a loud, proud, no holds-barred celebration, bursting at the seams with talent, colour, sound and spirit,” Ms Shaw said in a press release.
Following the show the performers were also showcased and sold artworks they had created through the Blue Tongue Adventure program including canvas paintings, paper mâché sculptures and hand moulded ceramics.
The Blue Tongue Adventure team said they hoped to see the event continue in the future after a successful debut.
They said the show brought communities together, and created an inclusive space where young adults with disabilities could express themselves creatively while being supported by their friends, families and carers.
“Everyone deserves a place in which to express themselves. A place to be seen,” Mr Twelvetree said in a press release.
“This was that place.”
Blue Tongue Adventure Toowoomba runs day programs for young adults with disability, weekdays from 9am – 3pm.
