TENSIONS have exploded between rivals Dawn Crichlow and Tom Tate at a full council meeting today.
The fireworks were lit after Mayor Tom Tate earlier today telephoned Councillor Crichlow and invited her to join the planning committee.
The Southport veteran councillor thought she would assume Cr Gates’ position as committee deputy chair.
But at full council, newcomer Gail O’Neill will take the position.
The debate between the rivals took off as an emotional Cr Gates said she would stand down as committee deputy chair.
“I was absolutely shocked,” Cr Crichlow told the Mayor.
She told the mayor that he was refusing to answer her questions on notice, and staging secret meetings with other councillors.
The most recent was last week, she said.
“You’ve insulted me for the last time. I’m that tired of these secret meetings you are holding,”she said.
Councillor Cameron Caldwell accused Cr Crichlow of grandstanding.
After the debate and vote, Councillor Glenn Tozer joined the committee.
