Mayor vows to review transport after concert traffic backlash

Gold Coast City Council has been forced to take action after last night's Pearl Jam concert ended on a sour note for fans. Read what happened.

Pearl Jam traffic review

Mayor Tom Tate has vowed to review transport after a backlash from some fans caught in the traffic jam after the Pearl Jam concert.

But he was quick to say most music fans were happy to plan their travel and the State Government also had a role in improving access at Carrara Stadium.

“Given the choice, the majority of people will book a ride out. Plan your trip, know that Nerang Station is only a short walk away so to speak,” he said.

“We’ll put more buses on. Definitely I will look at helping resources to put another local band at the end of the concert, so they can just singalong and say why leave now.

“The solution is to have some flyovers for the buses so they can evacuate in double number of times. You have the flyovers and traditional roads.

“I will be negotiating with the State Government on that, it’s a State road.

“They’re building an exit from the M1, to come down there, we should plan to have it all done.”

Pearl Jam fans took to social media to vent their frustrations following the show, with Bruce Normyle saying it was a “horrendous” end to his night.

“We get forced to take public transport and then we get dumped from the bus somewhere and can’t get home,” Mr Normyle said.

“Waited over an hour for Ubers that never came. No taxis at the rank.

“I had to walk home in the end. Got home at 2am.”

Other concertgoers said the public transport was a “sh** show”.

“Not quite sure how the Gold Coast believes it can host an Olympics when it can’t even handle a single show at a stadium,” Rory Swane said in a comment online.
