James Frizelle receives Gold Coast’s highest honour for his lifelong charitable legacy

From Depression-era mechanic to multimillion-dollar philanthropist — James Frizelle’s remarkable journey has earned him the Gold Coast's highest civic honour.

Leaving a charitable legacy behind is the most important thing to businessman James Frizelle.

The 91-year-old philanthropist was honoured on Tuesday when he received the keys to the city from the Gold Coast City Council.

He became just the 31st person to receive the award in the city’s history.

Mr Frizelle was honoured for his charitable and business works, which have seen more than $10m distributed to 100 charities across the region.

Mr Frizelle said he was delighted and revealed why he moved into philanthropy after decades of success in business.

“I felt I didn’t have to look after my family any more so I decided it was time to give back to the community,” he said.

“We started the charity in 2019 and it can carry on infinitum and it won’t stop when I’m not here.

“We wanted to make sure the charity carries on forever, that’s the big thing.”

Mayor Tom Tate said Mr Frizelle’s “lifelong journey from Depression-era mechanic to celebrated philanthropist exemplified civic leadership and transformational impact.”
