Plans are afoot for a rooftop bar at the top of a new $60.5 million building to take advantage of its spectacular views.

GOLD Coast Mayor Tom Tate dreams of sipping a drink in a bespoke bar on top of the tallest structure the council’s ever built in the city.

That wish may be granted when the $60.5 million HOTA Gallery opens its doors early next year, hinted HOTA chief executive Criena Gehrke.

“I envisage having a rooftop bar myself because you kind of enjoy the art world even more when you’re having great fun,” Cr Tate said.

Speaking on top of the construction site of what will be the country’s largest public gallery outside of a capital city, Ms Gehrke said an announcement was pending when asked if a bar would be on the top floor, as Mr Tate hoped.

Ms Gehrke offered a smile and said to “watch this space”.

“And I look forward to inviting you all for a glass of champagne sometime around March-April next year,” she said.

Ms Gehrke said the six-storey gallery would “bring all the pieces together” of the Gold Coast Cultural Precinct masterplan and she anticipated “a real spike in visitation”.

“We’ve put a program together of exhibitions that’s going to absolutely deliver on that dream,” she said.

“You’ll always be able to come free of charge to have a look at the extraordinary city collection.

“We hold over 5000 works and $32 million worth of art – and much of it has never been seen.”

Cr Tate said the project was a major economic stimulator for the city and 355 jobs had been created, which will jump to 900 by the time the gallery is finished.

He expected the gallery, which boasts 270 degree views, “will become a cultural beacon in the Australian artistic scene”.

The gallery has 2000 sqm of exhibition space, including a 1000 sqm hall for international acts.

Representatives from ARM Architecture and builder Hansen Yuncken also attended the topping out ceremony at the construction site.
