A LEADING Gold Coast tourism figure has thrown his support behind a bold plan to revamp Main Beach.

The Gold Coast Bulletin yesterday revealed the Main Beach Progress Association had developed a strategy to return the suburb to its 1990s heyday and make it competitive again with other suburbs.

Their ambitious proposal would also include small trains travelling to The Spit and rebadging the dining precinct as the nation’s Instagram capital.

Destination Gold Coast chairman Paul Donovan, a self-confessed Tedder Ave regular said the time was right for a revival.

“When I first came to the Gold Coast Tedder Ave was a thriving place not just for restaurants and bars but of exclusive fashion for both men and women,” he said.

“We need to work out a way of re-establishing this and this must be done with a cohesive collaboration between the community, retailers and landlords.

“Tedder Ave is one of the great streets of the Gold Coast but it has been a ghost town and we need to reboot it.”

Tedder Ave, once the epicentre of dining and celebrity spotting, has been doing it tough since the global financial crisis a decade ago.

Business owners say Main Beach has failed to keep pace with booming suburbs such as Robina, Broadbeach, Coomera, Southport and Surfers Paradise and desperately needs love from the Gold Coast City Council.

The Association are developing a plan they can pitch to council.
