WORK has begun on a $250,000 facelift of a much-loved Gold Coast park, with new features described as “state of the art”.
The Central Park renovation project at Varsity Lakes will boasts a state-of-the-art irrigation system and will include laying new turf.
The Council park is used by Varsity College students during lunch hours and physical education classes but becomes unusable during dry spells.
Area councillor Hermann Vorster said the project would convert the park into the suburb’s first community sports fields.
“We need to make better use of our open space to support a growing population,” he said.

“A modest investment will unlock thousands of hours of community use when dry conditions conspire against us.
“Importantly, it will give locals a place to kick a ball that is safe, comfortable and enjoyable.”
It follows construction of the City’s largest ever outdoor gym and a new undercover multi-sports courts nearby.
