GOLD Coast Mayor Tom Tate says doctors have given him the “all clear” after undergoing surgery to treat bowel cancer.
The Mayor, 58, remains in hospital at Pindara and has spoken for the first time since the surgery on Wednesday night.
Cr Tate said he was pleased with the results.
“I got the results of the tests back and I have been told I am all clear,” he said, speaking to the Gold Coast Bulletin by phone from his hospital room.
“This is a huge relief, I feel like I have been given a second chance.
“It just goes to show if you can catch it early it can be treated and I thank everyone for the support they have given me.”
Cr Tate continued to urge all men to get tested for the condition.
While originally expected to be released from hospital yesterday, the Mayor instead said he would remain there for a few more days for treatment.
Cr Tate revealed his shock diagnosis in Monday’s Gold Coast Bulletin and said it had come just months after he first got a health check-up.
Deputy Mayor Donna Gates will continue as Acting Mayor through Cr Tate’s recovery.
