HI-TECH 3D scanners are being deployed along the future route of the light rail before construction begins on the long-awaited Burleigh extension.
State Government contractors are doing a pre-Christmas blitz on the Mermaid Beach stretch of the Gold Coast Highway in preparation for construction to begin on the $709m Stage 3A extension mid-next year.
The first portion of work will focus on the land immediately south of the Broadbeach South light rail station which will be transformed into track as well as a stabling yard.

Transport Minister Mark Bailey said the tram link would need underground services including gas, water and telecommunications infrastructure to be moved to more accessible locations.
This will allow for future repairs and upgrades once trams begin running in 2023.
“After securing increased, fast-tracked funding just two weeks ago, we’re getting on with the job of building Light Rail 3A, creating jobs and the fast-tracking the economy,” he said.
“This technology is pinpoint accurate, allowing engineers to improve the design and changes to services before construction begins.”

The project is expected to create 760 jobs with the first awarded to Bundall-based surveyors Bennett and Bennett which is performing some of the early works.
It follows other works completed earlier this year at Burleigh Heads, Nobby Beach and Miami using ground penetrating radar and drilling equipment.
Mr Bailey said locals would see more workers on the future tram route in coming months before major tenders are awarded.
