A BURLEIGH Heads lifeguard centre will be named after one of the Gold Coast’s most high-profile lifesavers after a council vote on Friday.

Councillors unanimously voted to name the Burleigh Heads Lifeguard Centre after “quintessential Gold Coaster” Warren Young during their first meeting in 2021.

Mr Young last week announced his retirement after being named Gold Coast Citizen of the Year during an Australia Day ceremony.

The naming honour was backed by Cr William Owen-Jones and by Cr Pauline Young.

Both councillors praised Mr Young for his contribution to the Gold Coast, with Cr Owen-Jones saying: “He’s a quintessential Gold Coaster, and it is without doubt I think he should be celebrated.

“I think the naming in his honour reinforces to the community the most recent announcement of (council’s Citizen of the Year).

“Warren was very much surprised by the announcement last week and I think he probably will be very much surprised by this announcement today.

“I think if we’re ever lucky to have another lifeguard serve the community for 47 years we should recognise that person as well, but for the time being it’s about recognising Warren for his contribution.

“Nothing would bring more joy and pleasure to a lot of Gold Coast residents.”
