ONE of the Gold Coast’s most congested bridges is set to get a multi-million upgrade as the council prepares to roll out a revamp of the busy stretch of road.
The Gold Coast City Council has given the green light to a new design of the bridge which connects Isle of Capri to Surfers Paradise
Under the plan, the bridge will be four-lanes, up from two and be able to take larger volumes of traffic.
The cost is yet to be determined but previous estimates have put it at $34 million.
Detailed design work will now begin, with construction expected to be completed by 2021.
According to council data, traffic demand on the road during typical peak periods will increase from around 19,000 to more than 35,000 vehicles per day by 2031
Mayor Tom Tate said the work was years of planning in the making.
“It will be two lanes each way with the height increased to be in line with Chevron Island’s bridges,” he said.
“Boats which previously could not pass would be able to get through
“It gives those people who live up the river to acquire better vessels for their enjoyment.”
