THE Gold Coast is set to increase its eye in the sky program as the council expands its CCTV network.
Mayor Tom Tate announced 16 new cameras would be placed in blind spots at Chevron Island, Nobby Beach and Southport, adding to the already 160 CCTV network.
The project cost $214,659, split between the council and Queensland Government.

Cr Tate said the goal was to have 500 cameras across the Coast as a key crime prevention strategy.
“We know CCTV deters illegal activity and provides patrons with a greater level of security,” he said.

“It’s one of the most effective ways to deter (and) one of the most effective ways to convict.
“The mobile cameras get relocated and camouflage, for the illegal dumpings and the like we’ve had record prosecution.”

Acting Superintendent Mark White said the council cameras get fed live into the police headquarters in Surfers Paradise.

“The partnership we have with the council, with the CCTV cameras, is really critical to community safety,” Supt White said.
“It’s critical for us to be able to respond early … if there is a minor disturbance occurring, we have police there to respond early that could prevent something more serious happening, like a serious assault.
“It allows us to gather intelligence and respond quickly.
“The footage we get from the cameras has led to quite a number of prosecutions and enabled us to gather evidence in major investigations like homicides.”
