Your suburb is about to get more facilities for your ratepayer dollar.
City councillors have successfully lobbied to get an increase in local areas works funding — this is where they can pick their spend pet community issues.
It is separate to the citywide projects where tourism hot spots like Surfers Paradise and Southport, along with business centres like Southport and Robina get much of the headlines with big projects like oceanways and major parklands.
Local area works funding in the 2022-23 council budget has increased from about $750,000 to $945,000 for each division.
The list below shows the main focus has been footpaths, parklands and road upgrades along with community events. Each councillor was asked and listed favourite projects.
Please note: some lists had to be edited and in some cases their area funding was provided to what were citywide projects.
DIVISION ONE Mark Hammel (Alberton, Cedar Creek, Gilberton, Jacobs Well, Kingsholme, Luscombe, Norwell, Ormeau, Pimpama, South Moreton Bay Island, Stapylton, Steiglitz, Woongoolba, Yatala)
* Yawalpah Road – full duplication including construction of an additional railway crossing bridge. Pre-construction to commence July 2022, full construction February 2023.
* Dixon Reserve Parkland — next stage of detailed investigations and planning for this new 20ha destination park at Pimpama.
* Resurfacing roads — the largest ever budget for resurfacing roads in Division 1.
* Brand new clubhouse for Ormeau FC — joint funding from the City and divisional funds to assist in constructing a brand new clubhouse for the club.
DIVISION TWO William Owen-Jones (Helensvale, Hope Island, Monterey Keys, Oxenford, Sanctuary Cove, Studio Village)
* New playground equipment for Sickle Park, Hope Island — $300,000.
* Shade structures at Davis Cup Park and Palmerston Dr, Oxenford — $75,000.
* Footpath for Casey Rd, Hope Island — $150,000;
* Street tree planting in Helensvale — $80,000.
DIVISION THREE Donna Gates (Coomera, Maudsland, Upper Coomera, Willowvale, Wongawallan)
* Footpaths on Old Coach Road from Kondalilla to Gannon, Lauren Grove, Eliena and Brougham Dr, Hans St, Days Road, Upper Coomera.
* Park improvements via Stage 2 of Rosemallow Park at Coomera Springs.
Stage 1 of Playground, Waterfall Dr, Wongawallan.
* Improvements to sporting facilities at Viney Park and Coomera Sports Park — $180,000.
* Upgrade along Yawalpah Road, including design and construction of a duplication of the railway bridge overpass to support new development in the Pimpama/Coomera region — $2.8m.
DIVISION FOUR Cameron Caldwell (Biggera Waters, Coombabah, Hollywell, Paradise Point, Runaway Bay, South Stradbroke Island, Sovereign Island)
* The Paradise Point New Year’s Eve celebrations — $92,000.
* Gold Coast Game Fish Club shade shelter extension project — $20,000.
* Continuing the popular Sunday Sounds series, which brings live music events to Paradise Point Parklands each month — $40,000.
* Arundel Park Riding for Disabled to commence design work for a new shade shelter over the mounting area — $10,000.
* Provide additional sports field lighting at the Runaway Bay Soccer Club — $500,000.
DIVISION FIVE Peter Young (Clagiraba, Gaven, Guanaba, Highland Park, Maudsland, Mount Nathan, Nerang, Pacific Pines, Park Lake)
* Cycle and pedestrian improvements in the vicinity of William Duncan State School, Highland Park to improve safety and support walking and cycling to school, key services and destinations — $1.33m.
* Numerous projects at Nerang and Highland park on footpath construction — $3m
DIVISION SIX Brooke Patterson (Ashmore, Benowa, Bundall, Southport)
* Enhanced safety for the Southport community centre and surrounds.
* Investment attraction at the Gold Coast Health & Knowledge Precinct — $759,850.
* Renewal of 200 metres of footpath along the eastern frontage of Australia Fair Shopping Centre, Southport to replace existing pavers with coloured concrete and improve accessibility. — $1.2m.
DIVISION SEVEN Ryan Bayldon-Lumsden (Arundel, Helensvale, Labrador, Molendinar, Parkwood)
* Phase 1 Delivery of the Abbott Park Improvement Plan — $1,080,000 This will see the delivery of a toilet block, footpath connection, full-size basketball court, learn to ride track and power connection up grade to host community events.
* $200,000 for major community events including The Chirn Park Street Festival, three community Christmas carols, two New Year’s Eve events and a huge variety of school holiday community fun days.
* Greenacre Drive Improvement Project (about $100,000) — this sees the realignment of the travel lanes, improvement of pedestrian safety. This is alongside the $2.5m being spent on footpath upgrades and connections on Greenacre Drive.
DIVISION EIGHT Bob La Castra (Ashmore, Benowa, Carrara, Clear Island Waters, Merridown, Merrimac, Nerang)
* Footpath Mount Street, Nerang — $127,000.
* Seating/Shade Botanic Gardens, Benowa — $80,000.
* Playground Upgrade Stoner Family Park, Merrimac — $60,000.
* Shade Structure, Meadowview Drive, Carrara (larger than playground to enable future playground expansion or the installation of picnic setting) — $25,000.
*Active & Healthy Programs (free and low-cost programs for all ages) — $40,000.
DIVISION NINE Glenn Tozer (Advancetown, Austinville, Bonogin Valley, Gilston, Lower Beechmont, Mudgeeraba, Natural Bridge, Neranwood, Numinbah, Reedy Creek, Springbrook, Tallai, Worongary)
* Community Events and discretionary grants — $175,000.
* Park improvements at Natural Bridge and Springbrook in the western hinterland, including design/consultation for the Springbrook Peace Park community project — $250,000.
* Gilston, Mudgeeraba and Bonogin network connections for improved pedestrian pathways.
* Community Facility Improvements (buildings, sporting grounds and leased area improvements) — $120,000.
*Traffic calming in Reedy Creek and Mudgeeraba — $110,000.
DIVISION 10 Darren Taylor (Broadbeach, Broadbeach Waters, Bundall, Isle of Capri, Main Beach, Paradise Waters, Sorrento, Surfers Paradise, The Spit)
* $350,500 in tree planting, improved footpaths and engineering projects
* $340,500 upgrades of community parks including lighting in Appel Park in Surfers Paradise, irrigation in Hollindale Park Main Beach, further improvements to Roma Park in Isle of Capri and additional park projects throughout Division 10
* $90,000 to support local free community events such as ANZAC Day, commemorative services and community festivals
DIVISION 11 Hermann Vorster (Burleigh Waters, Robina, Varsity Lakes)
* Planting 233 street trees in central parts of Varsity Lakes (off Roundley Dr and University Shores) — $116,000.
* New footpath connections to Christine Ave — $110,000.
* Drainage and rehabilitation upgrades for field one and Two at Robina Common — $210,000.
* Irrigation and rehabilitation of parklands used by Varsity College Junior Campus — $150,000.
* Events program including Anzac commemorations and celebrations for Christmas, New Years and multicultural makeup — $100,000.
DIVISION 12 Pauline Young (Burleigh Waters, Mermaid Beach, Mermaid Waters, Miami, Nobby Beach)
* improving our high use recreational parks such as Deodar Park, Bel Air Park and Crocker Park.
* Construction of new community amenities and change rooms facilities at Pizzey Park
* Missing link footpath connections — pedestrian pathways to improve our active travel initiatives — such as Harrier Drive and Dunlin Drive
* Tree Planting in Miami — Additional trees for a greener and healthier city.
DIVISION 13 Daphne McDonald (Burleigh Heads, Elanora, Palm Beach, Tallebudgera, Tallebudgera Valley)
* Street Tree Planting in Matthew Close Burleigh Heads — $17,000 from Road Reserves Budget.
*Upgrade Amenities Tallebudgera Creek Park — $121,700 from Parks and Open Spaces Budget.
*New Playground and shade in Elanora Linkage Park — $150.000 from Parks and Open Spaces Budget.
*Currumbin Wildlife Hospital Foundation — $10,000.
* Palm Beach 100th Anniversary — $50,000 from Council Events and Programs.
DIVISION 14 Gail O’Neill (Bilinga, Coolangatta, Currumbin, Currumbin Waters, Currumbin Valley, Elanora, Kirra, Rainbow Bay, Tallebudgera, Tallebudgera Valley, Tugun)
* $225,000 — Goodwin Park/Jarvis Lane Carpark,Coolangatta Upgrade Contribution
* $200,000 — Currumbin Hills Park,Currumbin Waters Playground Upgrade
* $33,777 — 2022/23 Discretionary Grant Program
