RESIDENTS are bracing for work to run around the clock in one of the city’s most popular parks.
Works will begin as early as next week to create a tunnel underneath the Broadwater for a $400 million recycled water pipeline.
A boring machine will take around 100 days to create the tunnel between Biggera Waters’ Quota Park to South Stradbroke Island.
But the Gold Coast City Council has warned residents the work will be running “24 hours a day, seven days a week” in the park.

Council says the reason for continued works is to prevent the machine losing its forward momentum and stopping while underground.
“The schedule of works is a phased approach and will begin as intermittent as we progress over the next month, will evolve into continuous work 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” a letter to nearby residents said.
“Please be assured of our commitment to monitor, manage and reduce noise to minimise impacts on our local community.”

Area councillor Kristyn Boulton thanked residents for their patience during the project.
“Some of our beloved Quota Park is being occupied and will be for a while longer. We’ve hosted community BBQs and consulted with locals about timings and project work and why we need to move with this project,” she said.
“I have to say, locals have been supportive and where there have been issues, we’ve moved swiftly to work through as best we can with the community, our contractors and council officers.
“It’s been a really good team effort and I’m proud of the positivity displayed by locals and our city.”
The project involves two of the longest marine pipeline crossings of their type in Australia – one between Quota Park and South Stradbroke Island, and another from Southport’s Winchester Street to Main Beach’s Waterways Drive.
The 1450m pipeline crossing will involve the use of a 2.5m diameter tunnel boring machine to tunnel under the Broadwater to South Stradbroke Island over a four-month period.
Council says the night works “will be restricted to those activities deemed to be of absolute necessity” and that a “range of measures” will be used to minimise the amount of noise.”
