Cairns Regional Council is offering free green waste disposal for one week to mark the end of the wet season.

From Saturday, May 17 until Sunday May 25, residents can take their green waste to the Portsmith, Smithfield, Gordonvale, and Babinda Transfer Stations from 8.30am to 5.15pm daily.

Gold coin donations are voluntary with all proceeds going to the Cairns Toy Library.

“The end of the wet season is the ideal time to tackle overgrown gardens and clear out excess vegetation,” a council spokesman said.

“Residents are reminded not to dump garden waste into drains or areas where it could wash into the stormwater system.

“Blocked drains can lead to serious flooding during heavy rainfall and pose a risk to both property and the environment.”

There will be two more periods of free green waste disposal in August and November.
