A DECISION on the $3 billion resort planned for The Spit is expected to be made midyear before Queensland goes to a state election.
The State Government will today begin a two-month consultation period for community feedback on the future of The Spit and ASF’s plans to build a five-tower project, including a casino, on 5ha of Crown land just south of Sea World.

The process will involve two separate programs – one on ASF’s proposal and the other on environmental and amenity improvements in protected land on the northern Spit.
The consultation period will finish in mid-April, from which two reports will be prepared for the Government.
The outcome of the consultation “will inform the next steps” in the process.
Gold Coast business and political leaders welcome ASF traffic plan as questions raised
The Bulletin understands the Palaszczuk Government hopes to make a decision midyear ahead of a possible state election later in the year.
ASF director Louis Chien welcomed the start of public comment and said it was “time to move forward” with the project.
“ASF encourages the Gold Coast community to participate in the State Government’s consultation process,” he said.
“We want everyone to have their voice heard throughout this consultation process, and have their say about the Gold Coast’s future.
Spit development: Gambling war over Gold Coast market
“It is time to move forward because this will be an employment hub for now and for generations to come and will make sure the Gold Coast can continue to shine after the Commonwealth Games comes to a close.”
The consultation process will involve an 1100-person phone survey, information sessions for both businesses and residents, stakeholder briefings and focus groups.
Two online surveys will be opened today by the State Government’s independent consultant, and a letterbox drop of information will be made to 16,000 properties across the 4215 and 4217 postcodes, taking in Southport and Surfers Paradise.
Community information sessions will be held in the Broadwater Parklands on March 19 and the business session will be at The Spit on March 21.
More than 570 people registered online for updates on the development, the largest in the city’s history.
ASF resort: Trams tipped to solve Spit traffic woes
One of the consultations will focus on plans to revitalise more than 140ha of parklands on the eastern and northern Spit and how to “best protect” it as public amenity space “in perpetuity”.
ASF say its project will create 13,000 jobs, 9100 of which will be permanent.
The project will feature five towers, a 7200sq m public piazza with major restaurants and conference facilities overlooking the Broadwater.
A 1200-seat amphitheatre with a canopy, two public beaches and a large-scale waterfall are also included.
ASF said it had previously announced plans for local supplier briefing sessions to allow Gold Coast businesses to be involved in the project.
Opposed community and environmental groups have raised more than $27,000 to fight the project.
