CLP silent on pet croc permit promise after petition launches to overturn ban

A petition to revoke a ban on pet crocodiles has been launched, with the CLP saying they will ‘review’ Labor’s previous changes.

A petition to revoke a ban on pet crocodiles has been launched, with the new CLP government saying they plan to “review” Labor’s changes on permits.

The petition called for the ban to be lifted for crocs shorter than 60cm.

It comes after croc enthusiasts and keepers last month learned the Lawler government had quietly put a stop on permits for the unique pets.

Under the NT Government’s crocodile management plan, Territory residents were no longer able to apply for licencing that would open the door to life with a croc.

Existing permits might be allowed to continue under the 10-year plan “depending on the animal size and the adequacy of the enclosure”.

Katherine MLA and then-Opposition Environment Spokeswoman previously told the NT News the CLP would review the permit changes “if elected”.

On Saturday afternoon a government spokesperson said “the CLP Government will review the previous government’s changes on permits.”
