Clarence Zebras and Kingborough Lions will clash to raise awareness for a serious disease

Clarence and Kingborough are major rivals but next weekend’s clash will mean much more than the three points. Here’s why.

It is one of the biggest rivalries in Tasmanian soccer but the match-up between Clarence Zebras and Kingborough Lions United will mean more than just the battle for points when the two sides face off.

Both Zebras and the Lions will battle for the Franklin Cup at Clarence on Saturday, July 19.

But as much as both teams want to be crowned the best of Franklin, all proceeds from the game will be donated to Prostate Cancer Foundation of Australia.

Zebras’ winger Esteban Miranda said it is a great cause to raise funds for.

“I think it is an incredible opportunity for us to try and help out wherever we can for everyone who needs it,” Miranda said.

“We come out here and battle it out for 90 or so minutes but these people at home are battling for longer and harder.

“So we will do what we can, raise what we can and hopefully we can win the Cup as well.”

The Zebras have won just one game this season and come up against a fired up Lions who have three of their past four matches.

Lions winger Rowan Pitt said he was honoured to play in such a match.

“Yeah it does mean a lot to play in something like this, it is a pretty severe disease, so anything we can do to help, we will,” Pitt said.

“I have never played in this game for the Cup either so I am excited to get that opportunity to help claim the bragging rights.

“We are travelling pretty well at the moment, need to tighten up on a few things but pretty confident our boys can take the win.

“It isn’t just about the win or the bragging rights though, we want to make sure everyone is aware of this disease, so blokes go out there, get checked and it might just save your lives.”

The two sides will kick off at 2.30pm on Saturday July 19 at Wentworth Park 2.
