New federal MP Cameron Caldwell has backed the Gold Coast’s tourism and film industries in his maiden speech to parliament.
Mr Caldwell, elected in July to represent the seat of Fadden for the LNP, spoke in the House of Representatives on Monday afternoon, thanking family, friends and supporters and laying out his beliefs.
Mr Caldwell said he was “not here to impose change on our nation” and spoke of the value of the marine industry, film and tourism.
“Tourism and the Gold Coast go hand-in-hand and our city has always understood what it takes to drive the economy and welcome visitors to enjoy their stay,” he said.
“Our objective of more tourists, coming more often, staying longer and spending more is a simple approach to growing the sector.
“There has never been a more obvious, but important time to make a related point: More planes arriving means more tourists and a stronger economy.”
Mr Caldwell highlighted his future ambitions: “The people of Fadden support the Liberal National Parties and want us back in government, and to see me sitting over that side, and that’s what I want too.”
