Wild pig on the loose in Cairns

UPDATE, 1.30PM: The wild boar seen running around the streets of Cairns on Thursday morning has been euthanised.

Cairns Infrastructure and Assets director Mark Wuth said the council responded to reports of the wild boar roaming around Redlynch.

“On arrival, officers observed that the large boar was acting in an unusual and aggressive manner,” he said.

“Usually, council would trap a wild boar, however as the animal was acting extremely aggressively and posed a threat to the public and property, it was humanely euthanised on site.

Mr Wuth said if anyone saw a feral pig or wild boar they should call 1300 692 247.

“Feral pigs are a pest animal in the Far North and damage the natural environment and are a major threat to the conservation values of the Wet Tropics World Heritage area,” he said.

“They cause significant losses to agricultural enterprises in the region, and harbour and spread diseases affecting native animals, stock and humans.

Residents of the Redlynch suburb were shocked but excited to see the wild boar running around Michaelangelo Drive, Sycamore Close and Ebony Street.

Marc McCormack from Redlynch said he was heading to work on Thursday morning when he saw the boar.

“I said a few holy mackerels and proceeded to follow him as he walked up,” Mr McCormack said.

“He’s a big pig, I’ve seen a lot of them in my lifetime. He was a good sized boar.

“He was running up driveways, he hid in an open garage and hid beside one of the caravans.”

But this super fast pig had something to prove on the morning run.

“He was banging through fences and then ran through a hedge,” he said.

“You could hear him making quite a bit of noise. He ran at the end of a close and then went into one yard.

“He then went into another yard and crashed into a swimming pool fence.”

Mr McCormack said it was a funny spectacle and an interesting finish to see where the boar ended in someone’s backyard.

“He was exhausted and he had enough so he pulled up camp there and relaxed in a garden bed, that’s where he stayed.”

Despite the excitement, Mr McCormack said it could’ve been quite dangerous.

“Its quite dangerous especially if there were any school kids were coming,” he said.

“If one of them was walking down the street, he would’ve flattened them.”

This isn’t the first time a wild pig has been seen running the streets, back in 2018 a pig was seen running through Palm Cove streets.

Cairns Regional Council has been contacted for comment.
