Drugged teen’s warning: ‘Could be you’

UPDATE FRIDAY: The mum of a boy that woke up with mystery injuries and no memory of what happened after a night on the town has been shocked to learn how close her son came to being killed at the weekend.

On Saturday night Zaine Beard headed to Gilligans to farwell a mate shipping off to join the navy.

Leaving the Grafton St night spot soon after midnight, the 18-year-old stumbled into the Sheridan St Ampol nursing significant injuries.

Mother Natasha Renwick was horrified to learn from police on Friday afternoon what happened.

“Zaine was sitting there eating his pie outside Ampol and got up and sat in the passenger seat of (a random man’s) car then quickly realised it wasn’t his mate’s car he jumped out,” she said.

“The man (attacked) Zaine and then proceeded to chase him through Civic Shopping Centre and ran him over.

“The last CCTV was this man trying to hit him and (Zaine) jumped to the left and the man kept chasing him and he got him.

“I am in shock right now, this man kept chasing him for ages.”

A meeting with police photographers on Saturday is the next step for the family.

But right now Ms Renwick and her son Zaine, who isn’t accused of any wrongdoing, are counting their lucky stars.

“He could have killed him, you have no idea,” she said.

“(And this explanation) fits because police said it looks like he had been run over given his injuries, he has grazes all over.

“I am blown away.”

A police spokesman told the Cairns Post “investigations are continuing into the incident including reviewing CCTV.

WEDNESDAY: Police have appealed for witnesses after a night on the town ended in horrific injuries and a hospital admission for a young partygoer.

On Saturday night Zaine Beard joined with mates to send off a friend who was joining the navy. Gilligan’s on Grafton St was the group’s final port of call before hours later the battered and bruised 18-year-old stumbled into the Ampol servo on Sheridan St. He has no memory of what happened.

Mother Natasha Renwick said it was her son’s first night on the town and now after the brutally traumatic ordeal he has vowed it will be his last.

Ms Renwick is desperately seeking answers about what happened in the early hours of Sunday morning.

“We don’t know because he lost his memory,” she said.

“No one remembers, all we know from CCTV is they were all in Gilligan’s and all (police) saw was him walking in there and seven hours later (footage) shows him walking out.”

Though the mystery about what happened in the 800m between the servo and the nightclub is yet to be revealed there was nothing unclear about Mr Beard’s injuries.

“He woke up and his injures are everywhere, it looks like he has fallen back and hit his head and he had a small bleed on the brain,” she said.

“Everywhere on his back, it looks like someone has dragged him.”

The youngster woke up on a cold concrete floor nursing a cracking headache without his hat and Nike sneakers.

Cairns detectives are investigating the incident confirmed to have occurred sometime between 11.30pm on May 21 and 3am on May 22.

“Investigations are continuing, including a review of CCTV vision and we are asking for anyone with information or dashcam footage to come forward,” a police spokesman said.

Ms Renwick said she didn’t believe alcohol was a factor.

“He had not drunk too much and he only had $100 and you can’t buy too many drinks for $100, it does not add up,” she said.

“He is in a hell of a lot of pain and he also has a really bad cold after being on the ground for hours. It’s very scary.

“It’s just weird, was his drink spiked?”
