An Australian Maritime Safety Authority (AMSA) inspector said the damaged hull needed to be repaired before an operating certificate was issued and the ferry could safely return to the water.

Onsite specialist crews will now be required to complete additional welding and painting to ensure the vessel can safely operate and provide a continuous service across the Daintree River.

The ferry has been grounded since Monday of this week as (AMSA) conducted its five-yearly, out-of-water safety inspection.

Initial plans were to have the ferry back in the water by Friday of this week.

Contractors will paint and weld the Daintree Ferry hull this week in a hope of returning it to service by Tuesday, March 14.

Douglas Shire Mayor Michael Kerr said council had reorganised its works schedule to allow for this urgent maintenance.

“Safety, and ensuring we have a continuing service is paramount for the longevity of this crossing while council works on the future solution,” Mayor Kerr said.

“We are obligated to repair this critical public transport service and ensure a safe river crossing for the residents, tourists and economic sustainability of the region.

“We know extending the closure will inconvenience many people who are relying on a ferry service this weekend and appreciate their continued patience and support as we progress as quickly as possible with these essential repairs.”

Council is hoping to refloat the vessel on Monday morning with services to resume on Tuesday.
