The state and federal ministers for tourism, as well as local tourism professionals, are predicting a bump in visitors for Cairns after it hosts a significant industry event later this year.

Tourism numbers will be boosted when Cairns hosts G’Day Australia this spring.

Tourism Australia’s four-day workshop event G’day Australia will run in Cairns from October 9 to 12, bringing more than 300 internationally-focused travel agents to the region.

The pre-eminent tourism event will cap off specialised training for travel agents in selling Australian destinations to a global market.

TTNQ chief executive Mark Olsen welcomed the announcement.

“Our region has invested significantly in new tourism infrastructure and refreshing our experiences to ensure they are world-class,” Mr Olsen said.

“This will be the first time the frontline travel agents who specialise in selling Australia have returned to our country (since the pandemic begun) and they will be immersed in Tropical North Queensland … which is a great opportunity.”

Don Farrell, the Federal Tourism Minister, said the event would leave professionals with knowledge that allows them to encourage tourists to stay for longer and spend more money in destinations like Cairns.

“The Aussie Specialist agents who will visit our country … will see our iconic destinations and world-class tourism experiences for themselves, which is an invaluable experience for those … selling Australia to travellers around the world,” Mr Farrell said.
