A woman suffering leg injuries was flown to Cairns Hospital after the driver of a car allegedly pinned her against a wall.

Dangerous Operation charge

A 24-year-old Bamaga woman has been charged, over an incident of dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm in Umagico at Bamaga at about 10.30am on Wednesday February 16.

It will be alleged an altercation broke out at a Namok Street address, between the 24-year-old and a 29-year-old woman and a man known to her.

Police allege the 24-year-old then drove a 4WD towards the 29-year-old woman, who was pinned between the vehicle and a wall. She suffered injuries to her leg and was flown to Cairns Hospital.

The 24-year-old was later located on Wasiu Street, where she was taken into custody and charged with dangerous operation of a vehicle causing grievous bodily harm, wilful damage, common assault, common assault (domestic violence), driving an unregistered and uninsured vehicle and unlicensed driving

She is scheduled to appear in the Bamaga Magistrates Court on March 17.

Property crime arrests

Two men and a woman have been charged, after officers from the Cairns Property Crime Squad located a vehicle allegedly stolen from Mehan Street, Mareeba on Tuesday February 15, in a Draper Street carpark on Wednesday February 16.

Police attended the retail outlet carpark at approximately 12pm, where it will be alleged a 32-year old Redlynch man was located in a store with several electrical goods in his possession with no means to pay. It will be further alleged a 29-year-old Freshwater man was in possession of a knife.

The 29-year-old Freshwater man was charged with two counts of burglary and one count each of possession of a knife in public and unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

The 32-year-old Redlynch man was charged with two counts of stealing.

A 27-year-old Port Douglas woman was also charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle, possessing dangerous drugs, stealing and receiving tainted property.

They will appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on March 4.

WEDNESDAY’S NEWS

Drink driver charged twice

A 52-year-old East Innisfail woman was charged twice in one day for alleged drink driving offences.

It will be alleged about 11.45am on Tuesday, police were called to a fast food drive through in relation to a traffic complaint.

Officers have approached the car and asked the woman to turn off the car, but she instead placed it in gear and attempted to drive off.

The woman was stopped by police and they have attempted to breath test her, but she refused.

The woman chose not to comply with police and failed to supply any breath for sampling. She was dealt with at the Innisfail Police Station before being released.

Then about 1.30pm police observed the woman allegedly driving her car on Glady Street, Innisfail.

Officers intercepted the woman who again refused to supply a sample of breath.

The woman was charged with two counts each of fail to provide specimen (roadside), fail to provide specimen of breath for analysis, obstruct police and one count each of fail to remain at a place, drive UIL and drive motor vehicle with out a licence.

She was bailed to appear in the Innisfail Magistrates Court on April 11.

TUESDAY’S NEWS

Children rescued from croc in floodwater

Kowanyama police were called to assist in the rescue of eight children caught in flood water on Saturday, February 12.

The children aged between 11 and 14 years had been playing in the river near a tree located about 200m from the bank when one of them saw a crocodile approaching them.

All eight kids climbed to safety and yelled for help.

Police with the assistance of a local man and his boat reached the children and carried them to safety.

During the rescue police spotted the crocodile several times and believed it to be in excess of 5m.

Unplanned Outage

Ergon Energy have reported at an unplanned outage citing, “the loss of power supply due to fallen power lines,” in Cairns North and Manunda.

This outage is expected to impact around nearly 1500 people.

It is understood that power has been out since 5.58am on Tuesday.

Serious assault police

A 49-year-old Mount Isa man was arrested following an alleged incident at an Earlville shopping centre on Sunday, February 15.

It will be alleged about 11.20am the man was standing at a bus stop out the front of the centre swearing and indecently exposing himself to people walking past.

Police attended arresting the man. During the arrest the man allegedly spat on a female officer twice.

The 49-year-old Mount Isa man was conveyed to the Cairns Watchhouse where he was charged with two counts of serious assault and one count each of wilful exposure, public nuisance and trespass.

He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on March 2.

Parramatta Park – two-vehicle crash

One patient was transported to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition with abdominal injuries following a two-vehicle crash on Florence Street and Mulgrave Road at 5.50am, Tuesday. A second stable patient declined transport to hospital.

Bungalow – vehicle and pedestrian incident

Paramedics transported a female patient to Cairns Hospital in a stable condition after a vehicle and pedestrian incident on the corner of Aumuller Street and Mulgrave Road around 9pm.

WEATHER

There’s more rain on the way for Cairns today, with the Bureau of Meteorology forecasting anywhere between 3 and 15mm of wet stuff over the city.

From a minimum of 24, Cains will hit a top of 32 degrees, with a medium, chance of showers, most likely from the late morning.

Light winds will become southeasterly at 15 to 20km/h in the middle of the day, then becoming light in the evening.

The Peninsula Developmental Road is subject to a 5 Tonne GVM limit from Laura to Coen due to water over the road.

Craiglie / Mowbray

Road safety upgrades on the Captain Cook Hwy are expected to cause delays to March 30, 2022.

Edmonton/Gordonvale

Roadworks are being carried out on the Bruce Highway — Cairns Southern Access Corridor — Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale. Delays expected (during active hours of work), with all lanes in both directions affected. The work is expected to run until June 30, 2023.

Edmonton / Gordonvale / Wrights Creek

Road works on Yarrabah Rd and the Bruce Highway due to the Cairns Southern Access Corridor — Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale are expected to cause motorist delays.

All lanes in both directions are affected and changed traffic conditions are in place.

Feluga

Major intersection upgrade at East Feluga Road and Bruce Hwy. Delays are expected to August 12, 2022.

Lake Eacham

Wrights Creek Road is closed to all traffic. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.

Malanda

Bridge Replacement Works are being undertaken at Williams Creek on Merragallan Road commencing 29 November 2021 through to April 2022. A full road closure will be in place. There will be no access across the Williams Creek or any sidetrack in operation.

Ravenshoe

Roadworks have been reported at Grigg St, Ravenshoe and are expected to December 12, 2022.

Wrights Creek

Hill Road Closed permanently from the Bruce Highway to Harris Road to December 2024.
