TOBRUK Memorial Pool’s FlowRider wave machine has been out of action for at least four months, upsetting regular customers who were originally told repairs would be made in weeks.

Ryan Spear, a local tradie who surfed the machine up to three times a week as a relief from his busy worksites, said he’s upset by the delay because the FlowRider was how he liked to “cool off, Zen out and wash the stress off after a long day”.

“They said it was going to be a couple of weeks,” he said.

“So I kept paying my membership, 40 bucks a week, for a month and a half before I pulled the pin and asked for my money back. It’s a bit of a s**t show.”

Mr Spear said he received a partial refund.

Destry Puia, Cairns Council’s Director Lifestyle and Community, said the FlowRider’s repairs have been delayed because other planned works have been brought forward.

“The FlowRider broke down earlier this year and an investigation occurred to determine what repairs would be required,” he said.

“With the ride closed, Council decided to bring forward planned works to replace the specialised ‘rider membrane’, which had been scheduled for later this financial year 2022/2023.

“This was to allow all repairs to be undertaken concurrently to limit downtime.”

Mr Puia said parts had to be sourced from the manufacturer in Canada due to the specialised nature of the membrane.

“Unfortunately, there has been delays with supply and delivery,” he said.

“Council is hopeful the ride will be operational in time for the September school holidays, but it will be dependent on the arrival of the part.”

Tobruk Pool’s management has been contacted regarding the issue of membership payments.
