Hamper donation for COUCH clients

Christmas has come early for clients at a Cairns wellness centre thanks to a Cairns beauty salon.

The Aesthetic Lounge, Cairns has donated eight ‘pamper hampers’ to cancer patients at health organisation, COUCH cancer wellness centre.

Business owner Katy Hirst said she wanted to spread Christmas cheer, and make life ‘a little brighter’ for those battling cancer, particularly over the holiday period.

“For the last few years we’ve given to other charities … and this year we wanted to do something nice for people who are struggling at this time of year,” Ms Hirst said.

“If there’s anything we can do to just brighten their day, make life a little bit easier, more fun at this time of year, then we’ll do what we can.

This year’s hamper pack included medical grade skincare, cinema vouchers, chocolates candles and more.

Hamper recipient and COUCH client Jenni Mohamed said she was excited to receive the hamper, which she won as a lucky door prize, and share a bit of Christmas cheer with her family.

“I’m over the moon to receive something like this and especially something like this – a pamper hamper. I’m really excited,” Ms Mohamed said.

“I do like going to the movies … having massages and facials and all that sort of stuff so I’m looking forward to trying out everything and sharing it with my family and friends.”

A breast-cancer patient herself, Ms Mohamed had originally applied to become a volunteer at COUCH five years ago, before being diagnosed with breast cancer.

“Somewhere between that email and COUCH actually opening, I got breast cancer, so … even though I didn’t end up coming as a volunteer, but coming as a client, and receiving ongoing love, help and support over the years,” she said.

COUCH practice manager Milly McKay said the other hampers would be given to long-term clients.

“We have a number of clients who have been resilient and courageous this year and those lucky ladies will also receive a hamper,” Ms McKay said.

“A lot of the clients that come here do have financial challenges associated with cancer treatment, so it’s just a really nice way to give back.”
