A STARTLING rise in Far North’s stagnant Covid death toll puts pressure on emergency departments amid the region’s third wave.

After months of zero deaths, the Cairns and Hinterland region recorded two deaths on Friday with the total number rising to 79.

The two deaths are among the total 8 that occurred state wide in the past 24 hours.

With 130 people currently in hospital for Covid care, Cairns Hospital and Hinterland Health Services have said in a social media statement it was “extremely busy.”

“Our teams across the hospital are working hard to see and look after every patient, so if you want to come to our Emergency Department, please be mindful there are currently extended wait times,” CHHHS said.
