POLE TOPPLES ONTO CAR IN CBD CRASH

For the second time in two days a driver has struck a light pole in Cairns which then toppled onto a parked car, caused serious damage and exposed live electrical wires.

The incident occurred on the corner of Sheridan St and Mulgrave Rd with the Camry ending up on the footpath around 11.15am on Friday November 11.

According to Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Cairns Fire Station Officer, Guy Bulmer, an elderly driver behind the wheel of a dark red Toyota Camry was injured after his vehicle struck a light pole which then crashed onto a black Nissan Navara parked outside MyRide Cycles.

It is understood the black car which was damaged by the fallen light sign is owned by a workers in the bike shop.

Firefighters worked to ensure no-one was injured by the live wires which had become exposed by the crash.

“The vehicle driven by the elderly man took out some street lighting and hit a parked car,” he said.

“We cordoned off the area as we had live wires exposed, then these were terminated by Ergon and the scene is now safe.”

Mr Bulmer said the driver was assessed at the scene by paramedics.

“He was transported to Cairns Hospital by ambulance, ” he said.

A Queensland Ambulance representative said a man in his 80s was treated by paramedics and transported to Cairns Hospital.
