A CAIRNS builder leveraging unprecedented demand has branched out on his own to create a new company specialising in renovations, outdoor decks as well as new kitchen and bathroom makeovers.

The recently launched family-run business Barefoot Building FNQ, operating just a week, is already fielding strong inquiry from customers needing everything from a new deck to rural machinery sheds.

Marcus Wilson came to Cairns as an 18-year-old but left the Far North to learn his carpentry trade in the nation’s capital. Now back in Cairns, Mr Wilson and life partner Jaz have taken the plunge to be their own bosses.

“I could see some opportunity and was ready to leave where I was working previously,” he said.

“I love doing decks and bathrooms, but I’m open to everything. To me it’s mostly about the clients, good clients can make all the difference.”

Mr Wilson is a paid-up Master Builders Queensland member and has an up-to-date low rise builder’s licence to $800,000 issued by the Queensland Building and Construction Commission.

Barefoot Building FNQ plans to carve out a niche market to specialise in renovation work, including decks, bathrooms, kitchens and general maintenance work.

“We have been advertising for a week and we have had six leads and two of them are good leads,” he said.

Following an annual statewide tour and roundtable panel Master Builders last month revealed builders and tradies, big and small, were looking for certainty and stability into the future.

Master Builders CEO, Paul Bidwell said a key concern was the impact of minimum financial requirements (MFRs) that have proven to be ineffective in reducing financial difficulties for builders, according to a commissioned report by Ernst & Young.

“Queensland is the only state in the country that has this requirement and we need to determine whether the administrative and financial burden of MFRs is worthwhile,” he said.

Well aware of increasing costs and supply chain issues new business owner Mr Wilson had not experienced too much difficulty in sourcing materials but conceded longer waits for products had become the norm.

“There’s not enough builders and carpenters can’t be found,” he said.
