A young man who was rushed to hospital with “life-threatening” injuries following a two-vehicle accident on Sunday, has made “miraculous” progress in his recovery.

Tyler Slade, a 19-year-old tradesman, was riding home when he was involved in a car crash in Earlville, only a few blocks from his mother’s house on Sunday, March 23.

Around the time of the accident, mother Holly Reid said she felt prompted to go out and look for him.

“When Tyler hadn’t got to my house by a certain time that night, I started worrying and it was around the same time the accident took place,” Ms Reid said.

“I went for a drive down Carnation Drive and Balaclava Road thinking if there was an accident I’d see something.”

Concerned her son had crashed down an embankment, Ms Reid drove down Irene Street in Mooroobool, only a few blocks away from the crash scene.

“I went back to my car and heard the sirens, so I got home, called the emergency department and they said Tyler was being brought in,” she said.

“It was pretty surreal. Even the emergency doctor was amazed I was at the hospital before they rang me.”

Tyler was admitted to Cairns hospital in a “serious but stable” condition, before being transferred to Townsville University Hospital.

“He’s doing pretty well now, he was a lot more coherent and aware of his situation” Ms Reid said.

Ms Reid said Tyler had regained consciousness and was undergoing surgery for a broken arm and foot, and would face 12 to 18 months of rehabilitation, but was expected to make a full recovery.

“From where we were Sunday night and Monday morning with head injury and a bleed on the brain to where he is now, he’s awake, breathing on his own, eating, it’s amazing news,” she said.

Ms Reid said she felt an “incredible” amount of support and gratitude for her family and church community.

“We’ve already been surrounded with so much support and generosity to make the trip down (to Townsville) – my church community has come around us and the support has been incredibly overwhelming,” she said.

“Just to see Tyler progress as quickly as he has, is literally a miracle.”
