IN A first for the region a business on Lake St has brought an ancient Japanese beauty treatment into the modern age through a procedure now available at a dedicated new CBD salon.

Keiko Murphy’s new business on Lake St uses cleansing and gentle massage to stimulate pressure points and increase blood flow through the scalp to improve dry or oily scalp and reduce thinning hair and dandruff.

Plus, “it feels really nice”, the business owner said.

“Basically, the client sits (down) and we use a microscope and see the condition of the scalp,” she said.

“Then after that we use a soda gel to deep cleanse the scalp to lift up the excess oil.

“Because, often we don’t wash the scalp properly.

“Then we move to the basin and give them an intense shampoo and (finish) with a steam towel, a head and shoulder massage and blow dry.”

The new Lake St salon in Village Lane has undergone a complete refit using non-toxic paints that allows couple to have side-by-side treatments.

“In Japan (a) head spa is really popular. We care about the scalp,” she said.

“Obviously hair grows from the scalp and most people just look at the hair and try to make the hair beautiful, which is nice.

“But we try to cleanse the scalp and as a result we have beautiful and strong hair.”

Ms Murphy said there were businesses that offered traditional Japanese head spa treatments as a service within hair dressing salons but she believed the business to be the first dedicated head spa salon to open in the Far North.

K’s Japanese Head Spa is the second business owned by Ms Murphy who also runs Pouch Quality Aussie Gifts, also in Village Lane.

“(I opened the store) to showcase the beautiful local products to the Japanese tourists,” she said.

“And since then, I started thinking I’d like to do (it) the other way around and (showcase) traditional Japanese culture to local people here.

“And also try to implement a little bit of Japanese culture in Cairns.

“Instead of just adding and adding, Japanese traditional culture is more about minimalism. Just being simple and embracing what you already have.

“And we try to be organic as much as possible. We are non-toxic here.”

K’s Japanese Head Spa is now open in Village Lane in the Cairns CBD on Lake St.

A one hour treatment costs $121 and a 30-minute head spa is $71.50.
