Vehicle fire – Gordonvale area

In the early hours of Friday, April 1, emergency services including police and Queensland Fire

Emergency Services were called to attend a Gordonvale address after the victim woke to

find a taxi on fire at her property.

On arrival, QFES extinguished the blaze revealing the entire wheelchair accessible maxi taxi was burnt out. A Holden Commodore parked close to the taxi also sustained damage from the fire.

A crime scene has been declared and investigations are ongoing.

Serious assault Cairns area

Police have charged a 22-year-old Cairns man overnight with one count each of commit public nuisance, contravene a police banning notice, fail to properly dispose of needle and syringe, obstruct police and serious assault of a police officer causing bodily harm.

Police allege about 8.30pm on March 31 officers located the man on Lake St after

earlier receiving a police banning notice to not attend the safe night precinct due to his aggressive behaviour and making threats to assault police.

Police arrested the man after he failed to leave the area. While police were escorting the man to the police vehicle, the man has head butted an officer to the side of her face.

The man continued to obstruct and abuse police while being escorted to the police vehicle.

At the vehicle, police conducted a pat down search and located a syringe on the man.

The injured officer sustained bruising and swelling to her face, attending Cairns base hospital following the incident.

The man is scheduled to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on Friday April 1.

TUESDAY’S NEWS

School fire

Emergency services have been called to a fire at Cairns school this morning.

Three firefighter appliances are at the scene of a fire that reportedly broke out in an airconditioning vent on campus at Cairns State High School.

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Services spokesman said firies received the call at 9.30am to attend the school at the corner of Upward and Sheridan streets, Cairns North.

All students have been evacuated from affected buildings.

Reports from the scene indicate no flames are currently visible and no injuries have been reported but an ambulance and police have been called to the school.

MONDAY’S NEWS

Critical after crash

A man has been flown to Cairns Hospital after being rescued from a truck rollover east of Tolga on Monday morning.

Emergency crews including three ambulances, the rescue helicopter, six fire trucks and police attended the single vehicle crash on Jue Sue Rd near the intersection of Beantree Rd shortly after 7am.

A Queensland Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called around 7:12am and confirmed the man suffered serious injuries and was stabilised by critical care paramedics before being flown to Cairns Hospital.

“Queensland Ambulance treated one male patient who has sustained head, shoulder and abdominal injuries,” the spokesman said.

“He was extricated by Queensland Fire and Emergency Services and then lifted by air rescue to Cairns Hospital.

“Queensland Ambulance had a critical care paramedic with the road crew and another critical care paramedic with the helicopter.

“The male was flown before 9am to Cairns Hospital.”

A QFES spokesman said firefighters removed the man from the rollover and stood by to ensure the scene was safe.

It is understood that police are investigating the incident.

Armed robbery and stealing charges

Police have laid charges against a 16-year-old boy after an investigation into a Woree armed robbery on March 5.

Police allege at around 11.30am the teenager entered a bottle shop on Toogood Rd and

threatened the 31-year-old female shop assistant before leaving with several bottles of alcohol.

Police have linked the boy from Woree with six alleged stealing offences committed

over the past two months in the Earlville, Woree and Manoora area.

The boy was charged with one count of armed robbery and six counts of stealing. He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court at a later date.

Break and enter, Earlville

Police arrested two boys aged 14 and 17 years and a 19-year-old man on Sunday

in relation to an alleged break and enter at an Earlville motel.

Police allege that at 2.50am the three broke several door locks to enter the Mulgrave Rd motel before being disturbed by police officers.

They fled the scene on foot and were arrested a short distance away.

The 17-year-old Manoora boy was charged with one count of enter premise and commit indictable offence while the 14-year-old Edmonton boy was charged with one count each of enter premise and commit indictable offence and attempted burglary.

According to police both boys were bailed to appear in the Cairns Childrens Court at a later date.

The 19-year-old Westcourt man was charged with one count of enter premise and commit

indictable offence.

He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on April 13.

Taxi drivers assaulted, Cairns

Cairns police have charged two Mooroobool men after separate attacks on taxi drivers.

Police allege at 8.20pm in Woree, a 22-year-old passenger of a taxi verbally abused the

74-year-old driver before punching and kicking him.

Police located the alleged offender a short distance away.

Officers charged the man with one count each of serious assault of a person over 60 and public nuisance.

He was bailed to appear in the Cairns Magistrates Court on April 12.

The driver from Gordonvale was shaken up but did not require medical assistance.

In a second incident police charged a 40-year-old man after an assault in Mooroobool.

The man was a passenger in a taxi when police allege a verbal argument escalated.

Its alleged the 50-year-old male driver from Manunda punched the driver in the face.

Police were called and located the man at the scene.

He was charged with one count of assault occasioning bodily harm and bailed to appear in the

Cairns Magistrates Court on April 12

Roadworks are being carried out on the Bruce Highway — Cairns Southern Access Corridor — Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale. Delays expected (during active hours of work), with all lanes in both directions affected. The work is expected to run until June 30, 2023.

Edmonton / Gordonvale / Wrights Creek

Road works on Yarrabah Rd and the Bruce Highway due to the Cairns Southern Access Corridor — Stage 3: Edmonton to Gordonvale are expected to cause motorist delays.

All lanes in both directions are affected and changed traffic conditions are in place.

Feluga

Major intersection upgrade at East Feluga Road and Bruce Hwy. Delays are expected to August 12, 2022.

Lake Eacham

Wrights Creek Road is closed to all traffic. Motorists are advised to use an alternative route.

Malanda

Bridge Replacement Works are being undertaken at Williams Creek on Merragallan Road commencing 29 November 2021 through to April 2022. A full road closure will be in place. There will be no access across the Williams Creek or any sidetrack in operation.

Ravenshoe

Roadworks have been reported at Grigg St, Ravenshoe and are expected to December 12, 2022.

Wrights Creek

Hill Road Closed permanently from the Bruce Highway to Harris Road to December 2024.
