Car Crash

A two-vehicle crash has brought down a light pole on the corner of Lily and McLeod streets in North Cairns, shortly before 1pm today.

A Queensland Ambulance Service representative confirmed a crew was at the scene.

“Paramedics were called at 12.50pm to a two-vehicle crash where one hit a power pole,” she said.

“Three occupants were assessed and two declined transport.

“One person was transported to Cairns Hospital.”

Queensland Fire and Emergency Services Cairns station officer Tim Caswell said it was fortunate that no-one struck the main power pole which carried the three-phase as well as high-voltage lines.

“Today we responded to a two vehicle road traffic crash, the report was that we had powerlines were down on one vehicle but on arrival we notice we noticed these were not, which was safer for the occupants,” he said.

“Had the vehicle struck the power pole rather than the street light pole, things could have been much worse.”

McLeod St was closed for a time.

“Ergon is still on scene,” she said.

“Police are still on scene investigating.”

Skydiving incident

A skydiving incident in Mission Beach on Wednesday has sent a man in his 30s to Tully Hospital with minor injuries.

Paramedics were called to the scene about 10.30am Wednesday after reports of a bungled landing.

“It seems like the man might have clipped a tree on his way down,” a Queensland Ambulance Service spokesperson said.

“He didn’t appear to suffer anything serious, just minor soft tissue injuries and he was taken to hospital as a precaution.”
