A STALWART of rugby league and Cairns Court House has been remembered for his witty, sense of humour and caring nature by his family.

John Bingham passed away of natural causes on Monday, June 6 at the age of 73. He worked at the Cairns Court House for 25 years as a registrar and also had various roles at Brothers League Club Cairns including that as a board member.

His son Geoffrey Bingham said his father was originally from Longreach but moved to Cairns 35 years ago and stayed there.

“He was a very witty man, he had a good sense of humour. He was a very dedicated man with work, football, his family and his grandkids as well,” he said.

“He was there to help with anyone who needed help. He’d always have advice whether you wanted to hear it or not.”

John had two other children Stephen and Helen. His daughter Helen Bingham said he was a very supportive father.

“He always believed that if you put 100 per cent you had your best shot and at the end of the day you could walk away knowing you gave it everything,” Ms Bingham said.

“The first time we went to the beach I was terrified … I thought I was being taken out to the ocean and dad just held me by my hands and helped me and made sure I was safe.”

Ms Bingham said his attitude was no different with his passion for junior rugby league.

“He was really into working with kids and mentoring them a little bit,” she said.
