From working with concrete to taking to the skies, a Jetstar staff member has reflected on almost two decades in aviation ahead of International Cabin Crew Member Day on Saturday, May 31.

Cabin crew manager Alby McDonald started working for Jetstar in 2006 when the airline set up base at the Cairns Airport.

“We started off with 25 cabin crew and now we’re up to about 150 and five aircraft based in Cairns,” Mr McDonald said.

“It’s still a close base. Everybody knows everyone else and it’s quite a big family.”

Mr McDonald, who previously worked in the trades industry, said he hadn’t looked back since switching to a career in aviation.

“I used to be a concreter, and (when I started), I was up with the boys at the pub getting up me, saying, ‘What the heck are you doing?’, but it’s great, it’s the best job ever,” he said.

Cabin crew member Jonas Desiderio, who has been in the industry for a decade, said interacting with passengers was one of the best parts of the job.

“It’s really rewarding when you’re with nice customers and get to work with great crew,” Mr Desiderio said.

For crew member Loyce Thorach, one of the greatest perks of the job was getting to meet new people every day.

“You get to meet new people every day, get to travel to all over the world,” she said.

“It’s a very good community of people. We (staff) all get along and you make new friends every day, it’s really rewarding.”

International Flight Attendant Day is celebrated on May 31 to recognise “dedicated members of the flight crew who rise early, stay late and remain alert throughout the flight, providing comfort, care and reassurance of the safest level”, according to the National Day Calendar.
