An inquest into the death of a former army serviceman during an 11-hour siege in Queensland three years ago will examine the circumstances that led police to fatally shoot him.

An inquest into the death of a former army serviceman during an 11-hour siege at Yorkeys Knob three years ago will examine the circumstances and events that led police to fatally shoot him.

State Coroner Terry Ryan will preside over the inquest into the death of Mossman man Khrys Alan Mark-Kelly Vignes, 30, who died on March 29, 2020.

The inquest will look at the actions of Mr Vignes, the police response, and the engagement and search management strategies employed, whether they acted appropriately and whether their training and equipment was sufficient.

The incident was automatically subject to investigation by Ethical Standards Command, with oversight from the Crime and Corruption Commission.

Police alleged that, around 4.30am that day, Mr Vignes attempted to break into an infrastructure facility off the Captain Cook Highway at Palm Cove.

He was disturbed by a nearby resident and left the scene.

As he was leaving in his car, police allege he deliberately collided with a police car.

Police said in a statement at the time that officers sought back up and multiple crews responded.

A short time later at Smithfield Mr Vignes allegedly deliberately veered towards a police officer on the side of the road, causing her injuries.

He allegedly stopped on the Captain Cook Highway at Yorkeys Knob and set his car on fire.

As police approached, Mr Vignes allegedly produced a firearm and discharged a shot towards officers before running from the car.

Police established a cordon around an area to the west of the Captain Cook Highway to contain him.

While they were trying to find him in long grass, several shots were allegedly fired towards police and a helicopter.

Around 3.15pm, police alleged the man was in waist deep water and raised the firearm towards police.

He was fatally shot.

The inquest is scheduled for November 27 to December 2.
