With close to 80 years of experience between them, brothers Cliff and Glen Hunter of Hunter Automotive have been crowned FNQ’s best mechanics, as voted by Cairns Post readers.
The brothers beat 2022 winner Torque Masters Repair Centre by a tiny one-vote margin in a nail-biting run to the finish line.
Mechanical work has always been a family affair, with Glen following his older brother into the trade as a teenager.
“Cliff was a mechanic and I was his apprentice back in the days,” Glen said.
The brothers, who have owned their Bungalow store since 1996, specialise in general auto repairs and performance engine building.
“We’ve been doing (mechanical work) since we were 16,” Cliff said.
“I could not imagine getting up and not wanting to go to work. I can’t wait to get into the workshop.”
Along with their enthusiasm for the work, the pair are passionate about providing quality customer service.
“We like to look after clients and we’ve got a lot of family businesses that support us,” Cliff said.
“We’ve had people coming back for 20 odd years.”
Glen said he still serviced customers who came to his workshop while he was an apprentice, more than 40 years ago.
“I’ve still got customers (whose care I’d) done when I was an apprentice,” Glen said.
“When I used to work for someone else, they’d end up finding me, and now we do their son’s cars and their grandkids cars.”
The pair said they were honoured to be recognised for their work.
“That’s a good feedback from our clients,” Cliff said.
“We must be doing something right. That’s the idea, to keep the client happy.”
Glen echoed his sentiments.
“They’re the ones that got us here over the years,” Glen said.
