A proposed new whisky bar in one of Cairns’ busiest suburban strips has been given the green light to go ahead.

A development application to open The Hound on Collins Ave, Edge Hill, has been approved by Cairns Regional Council, paving the way for the new venue to open in the coming months.

The Hospo Group chief executive Darren Barber told the Cairns Post the new venture was roughly expected to open mid this year.

It will join the group’s portfolio of popular bars Wolf Lane Distillery, Three Wolves, Flamingos Tiki Bar, The Fox Small Bar and Cabana Bar at Palm Cove.

Submitted plans reveal the 122 Collins Ave venue – which is next to

the Edge Hill Thai and Laos Takeaway and currently vacant – is set to be fitted out with dark timbers and forest green decor.

The Hound will be able to seat a maximum of 60 people inside between the main area and a private hire area. With just five metres of frontage, all seating will be inside the venue.

The bar, which will specialise in whisky, spirits and cocktails complemented by charcuterie-style eats, has been permitted to operate from midday to midnight.

Mr Barber said he and other owners, Sam Kennis and Andrew Pare, had been looking to establish a presence in Edge Hill almost since the launch of their flagship Abbot St venue in 2016.

“This is really exciting. We really love creating new venues and the neighbourhood ones are really fun to do, we are really looking forward to it,” Mr Barber previously told the Cairns Post.

Only one submission, opposing the development, was lodged during the DA’s public feedback period.

The Hound will join other popular Collins Ave venues NOA, which recently changed ownership, Guerrilla and Ozmosis.

Plans have also been revealed to transform the former Botanica site into a new Mediterranean-style restaurant and wine bar.
