A TRUCKLOAD of fruit and veg used in the filming of Hollywood film Wizards! has been dumped just days after the scene was shot at Rusty’s Markets.

Workers at Portsmith Transfer Station have reported seeing a truck drop a large amount of good quality fruit on Friday.

All sorts of produce were dropped including bananas, pineapples, pumpkins and sweet potatoes.

An outraged, Kathryn Humphries, of Smithfield, was sent a photo of the fruit and veg by a friend who worked at the dump.

“The workers that were there on that day were taking it home, they were filling up their car boots,” she said.

“What a waste from the movie.

“The thing that annoyed me, if it was me and I am going to make a film and I am going to use Rusty’s Markets, I’d be thinking about what I was going to do with the food.

“What about Hartley’s (Crocodile Farm) taking some of it, I am sure they would’ve taken some.”

A spokeswoman for the movie confirmed some fruit and veg was taken to the Cairns dump days after the filming.

“I can confirm that fruit that was still edible was donated to Oz Harvest, local charities and taken home by the crew,” she said.

“The majority of the fruit that was taken to the tip was rotten as it had been on set unrefrigerated for a number of days.”

A spokeswoman from Oz Harvest confirmed they received a call on the Wednesday from the film company wanting to donate.

However, the produce never made it.

“(On that) day we were maxxed … their intention was to donate. We are grateful for them thinking about us,” the spokeswoman said.

Ms Humphries was disappointed more of the produce couldn’t have been distributed better.

She also believed much of the food could have been saved.

“How could you not give away a passionfruit that’s been sitting away, we are not eating the skin,” she said.

“If it was open cakes and food exposed I can understand but even animals would eat them, we’ve got a lot of animal parks in Cairns.”
