A lifelong fan of former Wiggles star Emma Memma had always dreamed of meeting her idol, but her medical condition made attending the sold-out show in Cairns seem impossible.
Robyn Klimek has down syndrome and mobility challenges, and is a resident at Regis Whitfield Aged Care Facility in Cairns.
When Robyn’s family and care team heard Emma’s new show Dance Party Island was being held at the Cairns’ Tanks Arts Centre on Sunday, April 6, they knew they had to get her there.
Regis Whitfield admissions co-ordinator, Jade Brown, said Robyn had a special connection with Emma Memma.
“Once I heard Emma was visiting Cairns, I knew I just had to get Robyn to her show,” she said.
“But she is at a stage of her life where she is bed-bound. Because she can’t balance her body to sit in a wheelchair, she couldn’t travel to the show by car or taxi.”
Despite the show sold-out and logistical challenges, Ms Brown wasn’t ready to give up.
“It was really a matter of pulling together every available resource and making it happen for Robyn,” she said.
“The thought of her missing out was just heartbreaking.”
So, Ms Brown reached out to the Queensland Ambulance Service, explaining their dilemma, hoping they could help.
“When they heard Robyn’s story, they were incredible. The assistant commissioner offered a three-hour booking with two paramedics and a stretcher to safely transport Robyn to the show,” Ms Brown said.
“I was almost silent screaming when I got the call. It was a total game-changer.”
Additionally, Emma Memma’s team generously donated three tickets to the sold-out show, ensuring Robyn could not only attend but also meet her idol.
“Not only was she going to the show, but she would also have the opportunity for a personal meet-and-greet after the performance,” Ms Brown said.
Describing the show as nothing short of magical, Ms Brown said it was a privilege seeing Robyn’s joy from the sidelines.
“Emma, oh my goodness, she was just magic. She’s the most generous, kindest human I’ve come across. She’s so professional in her kindness,” Ms Brown.
“She connected with Robyn several times throughout the show.
“Emma even made a point to come out before the show and spend quality time with Robyn.”
Emma’s attention to detail made the experience even more special.
“Emma was signing throughout the whole performance, and I didn’t even realise how much of a phenom she is in terms of making her shows accessible to everyone,” Ms Brown said.
For Robyn, the experience was a dream come true.
“I’ve been in close contact with Robyn’s uncle,” Ms Brown said.
“He told me it was incredibly special for Robyn.”
The tour continues with shows planned in Townsville, Rockhampton and Fraser Coast.
