Dunk Island spit: Castaways Resort reaffirms interest in contract

Mission Beach operators are plotting what the future of Dunk Island’s spit could look like, with one local business reaffirming its bold plan to bid for the next contract.

MISSION Beach tour operators are looking forward to a new beginning for Dunk Island after Cassowary Coast Regional Council decided to revoke Mayfair 101’s lease over the island’s spit.

While the investment group had council-approved plans to develop a beachside bar and had begun work, local operators have viewed the lease termination as a fresh start.

Tropical Coast Tourism executive officer Patrick Bluett backed the termination of the lease.

With tenders for the spit expected to open in April, Mr Bluett said he’d like to see a local operator awarded the next contract.

“From what I hear, there’s a couple of locals interested in expressing their case,” he said.

“I think council should look favourably on a local who has the infrastructure, probably in hospitality, and it would allow a local business to expand, while employing more locals.”

Longtime operator Mission Beach Dunk Island Water Taxi’s Nancy Lowe said she would be supportive of Castaways Resort and Spa to take control, after it had previously expressed interest and more recently, successfully operated a pop-up cafe at the island.

Castaways owner of 14 years James Neville-Smith said he’d certainly be making a submission for the spit.

“I believe the inactivity on Dunk Island has cost our business and broader tourism in the region significantly,” he said.

“We won’t disclose exactly what we’re proposing, but we’re a hospitality and accommodation business so it will be an extension of that.

“And yes certainly we’d look into day trip activities and island tours, but food and beverage is our core business.

“We want to return Dunk Island to its former position from a marine perspective so it can support larger vessels considering to stop at the region. And we can see a future for large events like fishing tournaments.”
